Motorcycle ready for winter storage

Winter Motorcycle Storage Tips

July 15, 2024Motorcycle Care, Winterization

As the riding season winds down, proper winter storage is crucial to ensure your motorcycle remains in excellent condition and is ready to hit the road come spring. Neglecting winterization can lead to costly repairs and a frustrating start to the next season.

1. Clean Your Motorcycle Thoroughly

Before storing, give your bike a comprehensive clean. Dirt, grime, and road salt can cause corrosion over time. A thorough wash, dry, and polish will protect all surfaces. Consider our motorcycle detailing guide for best practices.

2. Stabilize the Fuel System

Fuel can degrade over time, leading to gum and varnish deposits that can clog your fuel system. Add a fuel stabilizer to a full tank of gas and run the engine for a few minutes to circulate it. A full tank also helps prevent condensation.

3. Tend to the Battery

Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Connect it to a battery tender (trickle charger) to maintain its charge throughout the winter. This prevents sulfation and extends battery life.

4. Change the Oil and Filter

Old engine oil contains contaminants that can cause corrosion during storage. Change the oil and filter before storing your bike to ensure fresh, clean oil protects internal components.

5. Protect the Engine

For carbureted bikes, drain the carburetors. For all bikes, consider removing the spark plugs and spraying a small amount of fogging oil or engine oil into each cylinder. Rotate the engine a few times to distribute the oil, then reinstall the plugs.

6. Lubricate Cables and Pivots

Lube all control cables (clutch, throttle), pivot points (levers, footpegs), and the chain (if applicable) to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation in the spring.

7. Inflate Tires and Elevate

Inflate tires to their recommended pressure. If possible, elevate the bike using a stand to keep the tires off the ground. This prevents flat spots from forming.

8. Cover Your Motorcycle

Use a breathable motorcycle cover to protect your bike from dust and moisture. Avoid non-breathable covers, which can trap moisture and promote rust.

9. Choose the Right Storage Location

Store your motorcycle in a dry, secure, and temperature-stable environment, such as a garage or shed. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations.

By following these steps, you can ensure your motorcycle emerges from winter storage in prime condition, ready for many more miles of enjoyable riding.
